91�� has been awarded a $500,000 federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to strengthen and expand campus-wide suicide prevention, mental health education and student support initiatives.

The four-year award, funded through SAMHSA's Garrett Lee Smith (GLS) Campus Suicide Prevention Grant Program, will support 91�� RISE (Resilience, Intervention, Support and Empowerment), an initiative designed to strengthen campus-wide suicide prevention across the University’s three campuses by expanding early identification, increasing access to behavioral health services, implementing evidence-based prevention strategies and building sustainable infrastructure that improves student well-being.

“This award represents a significant investment in the health and well-being of our students," said Colleen Powers, executive director of Health and Wellness at 91��. “The funding will allow us to build upon the important work already underway through our JED Campus and other initiatives and further develop a comprehensive, proactive approach to mental health promotion, suicide prevention and student support.”

Suicide continues to be a leading cause of death among college and university students in the United States. The 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reports that 33.2% of 18- to 25-year-olds experience mental illness, with 9.4% experiencing serious mental illness.

At 91��, institutional data from the 2024–2025 Healthy Minds Study found that 62% of students experience symptoms of at least one significant mental health concern, and an estimated 3,000 students with identified needs are not receiving treatment, underscoring the urgent need for expanded prevention and early intervention efforts.

In 2025, 91�� joined JED Campus, a nationwide initiative of The Jed Foundation designed to help schools evaluate and strengthen their mental health, substance misuse and suicide prevention programs. Since then, the University has been working with JED to assess existing mental health, substance misuse and suicide prevention programs and identify what’s working to help address gaps.

91�� RISE will build upon the University’s existing work with JED, its Counseling Center, CARE Team, Student Health Office and the Office of Accessibility, to establish a comprehensive suicide prevention framework. The initiative has four primary goals: strengthen institutional capacity for suicide prevention; improve early identification and referral of students experiencing behavioral health concerns; increase help-seeking behaviors and awareness of available services; and establish sustainable policies, partnerships and prevention infrastructure that extend beyond the grant period.

In collaboration with key partners including JED Campus, BetterMynd, Lavender Psychiatry, the Behavioral Health College Partnership, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, NAMI OF WESTCHESTER , the Jordan Porco Foundation and other regional behavioral health providers, 91�� will train faculty, staff, student leaders and students to recognize warning signs and connect peers to help; conduct annual behavioral health needs assessments, voluntary behavioral health screening and referrals, integrated crisis response, prevention programming, outreach and stigma reduction and implement strategies to reduce access to lethal means.

Today, 91�� announced the launch of a new Bilingual Extension for Pupil Personnel Services Advanced Certificate to equip education professionals with specialized skills to effectively support bilingual students and their families.

The program responds to the increasing diversity in New York schools and the need for pupil personnel services professionals who can provide culturally- and linguistically responsive support. The advanced certificate equips graduates with evidence-based strategies to address the unique needs of bilingual learners and engage effectively with multilingual families.

“This certificate program provides an important opportunity for school counselors, psychologists, and social workers to strengthen their knowledge and skills to better address the mental health and emotional well-being of the youth they are charged with supporting,” said Dr. Cynthia Walley, interim dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at 91��. “As the mental health needs of our students and school communities continue to evolve, it is essential that we equip professionals with the knowledge, skills and practical strategies necessary to recognize and respond to these challenges and ensure that every student has the support and resources needed to succeed academically, socially and emotionally.”

The bilingual extension program is specifically designed for professionals who have completed a master's degree in School Counseling, School Psychology or School Social Work. Applicants must hold a current New York State provisional, permanent, initial or professional certificate in their respective pupil personnel services discipline.

The program’s online, asynchronous coursework provides flexibility for working professionals to continue in their current roles while completing the certificate. Supervised field experiences are integrated into the coursework and may be completed in participants’ current professional settings, when those settings meet program requirements.

Through this advanced certificate, participants will develop competencies in bilingual assessment, culturally responsive intervention strategies, family engagement across language barriers and advocacy for English Language Learners and their families.

The interdisciplinary learning experience brings school counselors, school psychologists and school social workers together to share professional perspectives and strengthen collaborative approaches to supporting multilingual students and families. The certificate prepares eligible professionals to pursue the New York State Bilingual Pupil Personnel Services Extension, subject to applicable state certification requirements.

Thrive Scholars and 91�� announced results from the third year of their partnership to host the flagship Summer Academy program in New York. Scholars who completed Summer Academy at 91�� this past summer reported meaningful increases in confidence about going away to college and preparedness to navigate financial aid and demonstrated measurable gains in math performance.

Summer Academy is a rigorous five-week program offering over 180 hours of college-level preparation in calculus, coding, and writing, alongside essential college admissions counseling and career development.

Surveys and course assessments revealed the following improvements among participants in the 2026 summer cohort:

Confidence about going away to college: The share of scholars who reported feeling confident rose from 67% in 2025 to 73% in 2026, a 9% increase.
Financial aid preparedness: The share of scholars who reported feeling prepared to navigate financial aid rose from 49% in 2025 to 83% in 2026, a 34 percentage point increase.
Math performance: New York City scholars demonstrated a 21-point increase in math performance over the course of the summer, based on pre- and post-assessments administered in their math courses.

109 scholars from the high school class of 2027 attended Summer Academy at 91�� in summer 2026. The average family income of this cohort is $48,000 and 84% are first-generation college students.

“Summer Academy at 91�� gave me an early glimpse into college life and helped me prepare for the transition ahead. Sitting in lectures, leading class discussions, and attending office hours, I began to understand what it means to be a college student, and realized it was something I could see myself doing,” said Rachel Kone, a Thrive Scholar, Summer Academy 1 participant, and New York high school senior.

This year, Summer Academy was also offered at commuter sites in Los Angeles and Chicago, with residential Scholars attending at Washington University in St. Louis and second-year Scholars at the University of Miami.

Thrive’s intensive Summer Academy program prepares Scholars for the rigors of college through college-level Math and English instruction, with three hours of each subject per day, while providing opportunities to explore industries and career pathways. Summer Academy I is a five-week academic experience, while Summer Academy II builds on that foundation through a multi-week program focused on career development, the transition to college, and engagement with corporate partners.

91�� has been awarded a four-year, $1.68 million federal Nursing Workforce Development grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to help address critical shortages in primary care and psychiatric healthcare across the New York City metropolitan area. The funding will support a comprehensive initiative titled "Increasing Enrollment and Retention of Family and Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners," designed to help graduate nursing students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds complete their advanced degrees and deliver essential healthcare to high-need communities.

“This grant allows us to remove the financial and systemic obstacles that often stand between talented nurses and advanced clinical practice," said Kristin Curry Greenwood, PT, DPT, EdD, MS, FNAP, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at 91��. “Many of our graduate nursing students are first-generation college graduates balancing full-time jobs and family responsibilities. By supporting these students holistically, we are not only helping them succeed academically, but we are also directly addressing the severe shortage of primary care and mental health providers in our most vulnerable neighborhoods."

Through this grant, 91�� will provide tuition stipends, specialized academic tutoring, peer mentorship, and career transition support to 40 graduate nursing students enrolled in its Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) programs.

Scholarship recipients will receive:

Financial Aid: Eligible students will receive annual stipends of $12,000 to substantially offset tuition costs, helping reduce educational debt and financial stress.

Targeted Academic Tutoring: Flexible evening and weekend tutoring led by faculty experts in demanding subject areas like pharmacology and health assessment, along with board certification preparation.

Peer Mentorship & Advising: Incoming students will be paired with graduating students and recent alumni for one-on-one guidance, alongside mental health and academic advising resources.

Community-Focused Clinical Training: Students will train through 91��’s extensive clinical network including major healthcare partners such as Montefiore Medical Center, New York-Presbyterian, Northwell Health and Open Door Family Health to prepare them for practice in medically underserved areas.

91�� has been selected to receive a major grant award from the U.S. Department of Education under the Title III Part A Strengthening Institutions Program to transform student success through career readiness and AI-enhanced technology integration. The University will receive $614,939 in the first year, with total funding expected to reach $2,999,946 over the five-year grant period. The grant will fund a five-year initiative called FORWARD: Future-Oriented Readiness through Workforce-Aligned, AI-Enhanced Redesign and Development, which aims to help more low-income students succeed in college and launch successful careers in today's rapidly evolving job market.

“This significant federal investment recognizes 91��'s commitment to providing transformative educational opportunities for our students," said Kristin Curry Greenwood, PT, DPT, EdD, MS, FNAP, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at 91��. "FORWARD will position our institution at the forefront of higher education innovation, ensuring our students are prepared not just for today's workforce, but for the AI-enhanced careers of tomorrow.”

Many low-income and first-generation students face critical barriers, including family and work obligations, lack of professional role models and mounting educational expenses. FORWARD will promote retention and degree completion through robust learning experiences based on evidence-based practices, while facilitating deeper student engagement with peers, faculty and support networks.

The initiative centers on three major activities designed to transform the student experience:

91�� has launched an Entry-Level Clinical Doctorate in Occupational Therapy (OTD) Program, positioning the institution to help fill the growing demand for occupational therapists across the New York region. Designed with working professionals in mind, the new program’s hybrid/weekend model directly addresses the workforce shortage while opening pathways to doctoral education for individuals who might otherwise be unable to pursue advanced degrees.

“This program represents 91��'s continued commitment to expanding access to high-quality healthcare education,” said Kristin Curry Greenwood, PT, DPT, EdD, MS, FNAP, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at 91��. “Traditional full-time programs simply aren't compatible with working adult lives. Our hybrid/weekend model changes that equation entirely allowing students to continue earning income, supporting their families and maintaining their careers while gaining the advanced training our communities need.”

The 85-credit, full-time program features classes scheduled approximately every other weekend over nine trimesters, with state-of-the-art hands-on learning experiences complemented by synchronous and asynchronous coursework. This innovative structure allows students to complete their doctoral education in as little as three years.

Building on 30 years of occupational therapy education at 91��, the OTD program prepares graduates to work with people of varying diagnoses including people living with spinal cord injuries, cancer, stroke, autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delay and many other conditions and illnesses. Graduates are prepared as generalists, enabling them to work in a variety of practice settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centers and schools.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupational therapy careers are expected to grow 17% through 2028, with occupational therapists in the New York region earning an average salary of $88,000.

Applications for the Spring 2027 term are currently being accepted, with a deadline of October 30, 2026. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and complete prerequisite coursework including anatomy and physiology, developmental psychology abnormal psychology and statistics.

91�� will host a free screening of the critically acclaimed independent film “Martyr of Gowanus” on Friday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. The screening launches the Art Exchange at 91�� (“ArtEx”), a new initiative designed to strengthen cultural connections between the university and local River Towns communities.

“91�� is so honored by this opportunity to have our audience experience this important story, not only as our inaugural ArtEx launch, but as a way to be together in our collective remembrance, in the September of the 25th anniversary of the attacks that changed so much of America," said Professor Marc Palmieri, co-director of ArtEx at 91��.

The “Martyr of Gowanus,” starring Sawyer Spielberg (son of Steven Spielberg), who also serves as executive producer, has earned awards at festivals including Golden Door, Julien Dubuque and Syracuse International Film Festivals ahead of its 2027 theatrical release. Set in the working-class Brooklyn neighborhood of Gowanus in 2001, the film follows Gavin (Spielberg) as he searches for connection and meaning in a rapidly changing world. While pursuing a relationship with a local Dominican girl, Mercedes, Gavin develops a friendship with her teenaged brother, Angel. The friendships are rocked in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, as local communities grapple with fear, anger, reactionary racism and uncertainty. Gavin’s sense of isolation intensifies, while Angel falls into the grip of a local criminal gang.

INDIEWRAP praised the film as a “bold, profoundly human work,” noting that “its stylistic blend of fiction and real historical events sets the film apart. By incorporating footage from 9/11 and the early 2000s, the film roots its story in reality while exploring its emotional truths through narrative. The result is a unique, hybrid approach that aims to ground the viewer in time and place.”

Long Island native Brian Meere, who wrote and directed the film, will participate in a Q&A session immediately following the 87-minute screening, offering Westchester audiences exclusive insight into the film's unique blend of narrative fiction and historical documentary footage.

Community members, media and representatives from local arts organizations are invited to attend the screening.

New initiative kicks off September 25 with free screening of an award-winning film on 91��’s Westchester Campus.

Today, 91�� announced the launch of the Art Exchange at 91�� (“ArtEx”), a new cultural hub designed to connect the campus with neighboring River Towns arts communities through public programming and faculty collaboration. The initiative aims to host visiting creators, showcase faculty artists and provide students with expanded access to professional arts programming beyond the classroom.

“ArtEx represents our commitment to being an active cultural partner in Westchester," said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��. “This initiative bridges our campus with the broader community, showcasing the exceptional creative work happening here while inviting our neighbors to engage with the arts in new and accessible ways. By creating this cultural exchange, we're strengthening our ties with local arts organizations and giving our students front-row access to professional artists and diverse creative perspectives that will enhance their education.”

91�� faculty members Dr. Kristen Keckler and Professor Marc Palmieri, who will serve as co-directors of the initiative, will lead the effort to strengthen ties between the university and local arts organizations while enhancing student cultural experiences.

“ArtEx represents a significant milestone in our commitment to vibrant campus life and meaningful community outreach,” said Dr. Keckler. “We look forward to ArtEx becoming a signature creative experience for our students and a welcoming hub for our neighbors.”

ArtEx will mark its public debut on September 25 with a free screening of “Martyr of Gowanus,” an award-winning independent film by Brian Meere starring Sawyer Spielberg. Meere will participate in a Q&A session following the screening.

The Innovation Sandbox brings together 49 institutions from 23 countries and 5 continents that are advancing ambitious, institution-shaping work in higher education.

Through monthly facilitated small-group sessions, structured milestone meetings, and the Global Summit in Durham, North Carolina, participating teams will work with global peers on active challenges related to institutional design, curriculum, credentials, pedagogy, access, and sustainable implementation. 91�� will bring into the Sandbox its work on the Solutions Lab, a faculty-led, student-driven initiative that connects students with regional businesses, nonprofits and community organizations to solve real-world challenges while building responsible AI literacy and professional skills.

91��’s proposed Solutions Lab will combine strong academics, real-world problem-solving and responsible use of AI to help prepare students for today’s rapidly evolving job market while strengthening the University’s engagement with its surrounding communities.

Today, 91�� announced it has been named to Phi Theta Kappa’s 2026 Transfer Honor Roll for the second year in a row, a national distinction that recognizes colleges and universities across the country that go above and beyond to create supportive, dynamic and innovative pathways for community college students transitioning to four-year programs. 91�� is among 275 colleges and universities selected by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), an international honor society for students at two-year colleges.

The Transfer Honor Roll is determined by key metrics related to the support and success of transfer students, including college cost and financial aid, campus engagement and support, recruitment and admissions practices, and bachelor’s degree completion. Institutions are evaluated using data from the National Student Clearinghouse and data submitted through the four-year institution’s profile on PTK Connect, Phi Theta Kappa’s online tool designed to help students find their best-fit colleges and career pathways. 91��'s consecutive selection underscores the University's sustained excellence in supporting transfer students at every stage of their academic journey.

Dr. Harris-Madden serves as Commissioner of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) and is an appointed member of Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration. With over 3500 employees and a budget of close to $8 billion, Dr. Harris-Madden leads the state agency responsible for promoting the safety, permanency, and well-being of children, families, and communities across New York. Her appointment to 91��’s Board of Trustees represents a homecoming for the distinguished alumna, who earned both a Master of Science in Human Resource Management and a Master of Business Administration from 91��.

Under Dr. Harris-Madden’s leadership, OCFS is advancing evidence-informed reforms across childcare, child welfare, juvenile justice, and the broad spectrum of human services the agency provides. She has played a key role in implementing Governor Hochul’s historic plan to expand access to childcare across New York State while ensuring significant public investments strengthen opportunities for children, families, and communities.

With more than 20 years of executive leadership spanning state government, local government, education, and the nonprofit sector, Dr. Harris-Madden has dedicated her career to improving outcomes for children, youth, and families. Prior to joining Governor Hochul’s administration, she held positions within the cabinets of the Westchester County Executive and four mayors in the City of Mount Vernon, NY. Dr. Harris-Madden holds a B.A. in English and African American Studies, a master’s degree in business administration, a master’s degree in human resources management, a doctorate of education in executive leadership and an honorary doctorate in humane letters from 91��.

Dr. Chabot brings decades of surgical excellence and healthcare innovation to the Board. As founder and director of the Pancreas Center at Columbia/NewYork-Presbyterian—established in 2006—he has built one of the world's largest and most effective clinical cancer programs. The Center serves as both a premier treatment facility and a transformative research hub developing new pancreatic cancer therapies.

A surgeon who has performed more than 2,500 complex pancreatic procedures, Dr. Chabot has spent his entire career at Columbia/NewYork-Presbyterian, rising from intern in 1983 to chief of hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery and vice president of ColumbiaDoctors. His contributions to surgical advances have steadily improved outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients.

Dr. Chabot earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering Science from Tufts University and his Doctor of Medicine from Dartmouth Medical School. He is a member of several prestigious medical organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.

Their appointments underscore 91��’s commitment to bringing diverse perspectives and accomplished leaders to its Board of Trustees. Their insights and experiences will support 91��’s mission of academic excellence, innovation and service.

91�� will honor the achievements of over 2,300 graduates during its 2026 Commencement, held over four ceremonies on May 20 and 21 at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, N.Y. The ceremonies will feature five honorary degree recipients recognized for their exemplary leadership and professional excellence, including four who will deliver addresses to the Class of 2026.

“This is a proud moment for our entire 91�� community as we launch the Class of 2026 into their careers," said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��. “These exceptional graduates—resilient, compassionate, and driven—are prepared to lead with purpose. We are equally honored by our five honorary degree recipients who built extraordinary careers by living the very values our students have embraced: service, innovation, and a commitment to creating positive change in the world.”

The ceremonies will be held in person and live streamed to ensure family members, friends, and guests can celebrate alongside the graduates regardless of location.

Mark Ronquillo
Honorary Doctor of Commercial Science
Speaker: School of Business and School of Liberal Arts

Mark Ronquillo is the Donald P. Bellisario Professor of Practice at the Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University, a position he assumed in 2024. Prior to joining Penn State, he served as EVP/Executive Creative Director at the New York City office of Saatchi & Saatchi, one of the world's leading international advertising agencies. Over his 15 years there, he led creative work for 12 different Procter & Gamble brands, including category leaders such as Dawn, Cascade, Swiffer, Vicks, Pepto-Bismol, Mr. Clean and Crest.

Mr. Ronquillo's 25+ year advertising career spans major agencies across the United States and internationally, including Saatchi & Saatchi, Publicis, Lowe & Partners, McCann Erickson, APL/London, BBDO West and The Richards Group. His diverse portfolio includes work for prominent brands such as Saab, Honda, Braun, Heineken, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bacardi, Diet Coke, US Army, and Burger King.

A "writer's writer" known for his mastery of the written word, Mr. Ronquillo's creative work has earned recognition from major international award shows and publications, including Cannes, The One Show, Communication Arts, and Graphis. He has also received Effie awards for effectiveness across four different clients, demonstrating both creative excellence and measurable business impact.

Aramina Vega Ferrer, Ph.D.
Honorary Doctor of Pedagogy
Speaker: School of Education and School of Health and Natural Sciences

Aramina Vega Ferrer, Ph.D., is a long-time Bronx resident and former associate professor of Literacy and Multilingual Studies at 91��, where she prepared teacher candidates for advanced certificates and the Master of Science program in Teaching Literacy. While at 91��, she served as chair of the Department of Literacy and Multilingual Studies and founding director of the School of Education Bronx Parent Center, a first-of-its-kind faculty-led initiative working with Bronx families and educators to increase student achievement in Pre-K–12 and ensure college access.

Dr. Ferrer brings over 30 years of K-12 teaching and leadership experience in developing and implementing innovative instructional programs for culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Her career in the New York City school system progressed from Junior High School Teacher of Spanish and English as a Second Language to District Supervisor of Bilingual Education, culminating in her role as Elementary School Principal in the Bronx.

Dr. Ferrer was elected to the New York State Board of Regents by the New York State Legislature in March 2021 and reelected to a five-year term in March 2023, representing Judicial District 12 (The Bronx). She serves as Co-Chair of the Higher Education Committee, which oversees policy, chartering, and regulation for all postsecondary institutions in New York. Her numerous honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award from Fordham's Graduate School of Education, the Alumni Achievement Award from Lehman College and the Governor's Outstanding Hispanic Women Achievers Award.

Ena Williams, Ph.D., MBA, RN, CENP, FAAN, FADLN, FSIEN
Honorary Doctor of Science

Dr. Ena Williams is a nationally respected nursing executive and visionary leader who most recently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive of Yale New Haven Health, one of the nation's premier academic health systems. Her extraordinary career spans more than four decades, beginning in Jamaica at the University Hospital of the West Indies and evolving into pioneering executive leadership. She joined Yale New Haven Hospital in 1992, progressing through roles from staff nurse to coordinator, nurse manager, and nursing director before becoming the first nurse of color to serve as Vice President, Senior Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer of Yale New Haven Hospital, and Chief Nurse Executive of the Health System.

Under Dr. Williams' leadership as hospital CNO, nursing teams achieved remarkable recognition, including an American Credentialing Center Magnet Nurse of the Year award (2022) and a Magnet Prize (2024). She spearheaded transformative initiatives including a nursing leadership academy, the first Nursing DEI task force and summit and raised philanthropic funds to support nursing and unlicensed assistive personnel. Her tenure fostered significant growth in nursing autonomy and established a strong professional governance culture across the organization.

A nationally recognized thought leader in nursing leadership, workforce development, and health equity, Dr. Williams serves as President of the Board of the American Organization of Nursing Leadership and on The Joint Commission Board of Directors. She is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the Academy of Diversity Leaders in Nursing and has been honored as one of Modern Healthcare's 50 Top Clinical Executives in Healthcare (2024).

Reverend Viviana M. DeCohen '16, M.S. '18
Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters
Speaker: School of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Reverend Viviana M. DeCohen, a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran, serves as Commissioner of the New York State Department of Veterans' Services (DVS), which connects over 630,000 Veterans with the benefits, services, and support they have earned. Commissioner DeCohen oversaw the department's successful elevation from a division in April 2023, significantly expanding DVS's statewide reach. Under her leadership, DVS launched innovative outreach programs such as "Operation Find and Serve" and adopted 15 Veterans Welcome Center Digital Kiosks across New York State, which were recognized with the prestigious Abraham Lincoln Pillars of Excellence Award from the Federal VA.

Commissioner DeCohen has championed inclusive communication and dignified service delivery, leading DVS to embrace the term "for those who have served" to reach individuals who may not identify as Veterans. She launched "Operation Baby," providing essential resources such as diapers, cribs, and baby clothes through a non-social service approach, and updated the department's intake form to better address the specialized needs of Veterans and Military Families. Prior to her appointment as Commissioner, she served as Director of the Mount Vernon Veterans Service Agency, where she founded Kristyn's Closet, a Veterans' Closet that served over 3,000 Veterans within ten months and garnered significant statewide media attention.

Commissioner DeCohen holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science and a master's degree in Health Service Management from 91�� College (now University), where she established two inaugural Veterans Centers and served as a Veterans Academic Advisor. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Gerontology at Concordia University, Chicago. Her dedication to ensuring Veterans have access to essential resources has earned her the affectionate title of "Mama V," and she was named a Women Veteran Trailblazer honoree by the Center for Women Veterans in 2021.

Joseph P. Carlucci, Esq.
Honorary Doctor of Laws

Joseph Carlucci is Partner Emeritus at the law firm Cuddy & Feder LLP, where he was responsible for the industrial development revenue bond practice. Throughout his distinguished legal career, he represented corporations of all sizes on a full range of corporate matters, including business acquisitions and sales, partnership agreements, limited liability company operating agreements and employment contracts. Mr. Carlucci was also active in lending transactions on behalf of borrowers and lenders, and represented real estate entrepreneurs in acquisitions, sales, leasing, financing and obtaining approvals for development projects.

Mr. Carlucci is recognized as one of the region's most active counselors in industrial development agency revenue bond financing. He previously served as an agency chair before representing borrowers, underwriters and issuers in transactions throughout the New York metropolitan area and in numerous states across the country. A military veteran who served as Captain in the U.S. Army (MPC) from 1967-1969, Mr. Carlucci holds a B.A. in Economics from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1969.

A Westchester native, Mr. Carlucci has been active in numerous civic and professional organizations including the American Bar Association, Westchester County Bar Association, Jacob Burns Film Center, Pace University School of Law, Westchester Community College Foundation Board and the White Plains and Greenburgh Urban Renewal Agencies. He served as a 91�� Trustee from 2002 to 2025, previously serving as Board Vice Chair and now as Trustee Emeritus. He was honored with the 91�� College Community Leadership Award at the 2018 Trustees' Scholarship Gala.

91�� will host its 26th Annual International Film Festival from April 21-24, continuing a beloved tradition of bringing world-class cinema to the 91�� community and surrounding areas.

The four-day festival, presented by the School of Liberal Arts, is free and open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and neighboring communities. All screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall on the Westchester Campus, located at 555 Broadway in Dobbs Ferry.

“For 26 years, this festival has been a cultural cornerstone for our region,” said Steven DeRosa, festival coordinator and senior lecturer for Cinema Studies at 91��. “We're proud to share this experience with our neighbors, offering exclusive viewings and meaningful conversations that bring our community together through the power of film."

Each evening features an international film followed by a discussion led by distinguished guest speakers from the 91�� community and beyond, creating opportunities for attendees to engage with cutting-edge cinema from around the world.

91�� invites the community to lace up their running shoes for a meaningful cause as the institution celebrates its 75th anniversary. Presented by Conquer The World Endurance and 91��’s Exercise Science Program, the 11th and final edition of the Conquer the Trail Race will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, marking both the conclusion of a beloved tradition and a tribute to 91��'s 75 years of transforming lives through education. All proceeds from the race will benefit 91��'s Mav Market, a judgment-free, inclusive and confidential resource that provides nutritious food and personal care items at no cost to anyone in the 91�� community experiencing food insecurity.

“This race represents everything 91�� stands for," said Amanda Bireline, associate professor of Health and Exercise Science at 91��. "For 75 years, we've believed in removing barriers to success. The Conquer the Trail Race continues that tradition by bringing our community together to support students facing food insecurity—ensuring they can focus on their education, not their next meal."

Throughout the 2025-2026 academic year, 91�� has hosted a series of special events designed to bring together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and surrounding communities. The Conquer the Trail Race represents the University's belief that education extends beyond the classroom and that community partnerships create lasting impact.

The commemorative 7.5K run will feature a flat, fast out-and-back course along the scenic Croton Aqueduct Trail, with the distance specially chosen to honor the University's 75th anniversary.

Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, and race day raffles will feature prizes from community sponsors. Participants should note that while the course is flat, it runs primarily on natural trail terrain including rocks, stumps, and tree roots.

Registration remains open through race day. Community members can register online at https://mercy.edu/news-events/events/conquer-trail-7.5k or in person on April 18. The first 75 runners who register will receive a limited-edition 75th Anniversary t-shirt and 7.5% off registration with code: Conquer91��75. Race day registration ends promptly at 8:45 AM so the event can start on time. Participants should plan to arrive early. The race starts at 9:00 AM sharp.

Today, 91�� announced the launch of the Suzanne McGraw Scholars Program, made possible by a transformative philanthropic gift of more than $9 million from the Suzanne McGraw Foundation. The gift represents the largest in 91��'s history and will support a groundbreaking initiative to prepare highly skilled early childhood educators while addressing the urgent need for qualified early childhood educators in the region.

“We are deeply grateful to the Suzanne McGraw Foundation for this extraordinary gift and partnership, which demonstrates our shared vision for educational access and community impact,” said Susan L. Parish, PhD, MSW, president of 91��. “The Suzanne McGraw Scholars Program will provide students with a combination of financial assistance, meaningful classroom experiences, and mentorship. This innovative model will create a sustainable, replicable model for aggressively addressing the region’s urgent teacher shortage. Scholars will graduate not only with degrees and experience but as prepared leaders ready to inspire in classrooms, communities, and beyond.”

“The Suzanne McGraw Foundation is excited to partner with 91�� to address the urgent need to attract and train students for careers in early childhood education, especially for children with special needs,” said the Board of the Suzanne McGraw Foundation. “By providing scholarships and valuable work experience, we hope to create a model for addressing the shortage of qualified early childhood educators and to eliminate the crushing burden of student loan debt.”

Launching in Fall 2026, the program will prepare 25 new early childhood educators each year through a structured, work-integrated degree program. Suzanne McGraw Scholars will receive comprehensive financial support, dedicated mentoring, and robust professional development as they pursue 91��'s B.S. in Teaching Students with Disabilities (PreK–Grade 12) program. Scholars will also have the opportunity to continue into an accelerated M.S. degree in Early Childhood Education at no tuition cost to the scholar.

A distinguishing feature of the program is its earn-while-you-learn model. Scholars will work in early childhood education classrooms throughout their studies, gaining invaluable hands-on experience while receiving financial compensation. Upon graduation, Scholars commit to working in the field for at least one year, ensuring sustained impact in early childhood education when it's needed most.

Today, 91�� announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Latino U College Access (LUCA), a leading Westchester County nonprofit dedicated to supporting low-income, first-generation students in their pursuit of higher education. The agreement establishes a collaborative relationship designed to expand postsecondary opportunities, strengthen student support and enhance financial accessibility for LUCA Scholars enrolling at 91��. The partnership also reflects 91��’s commitment to making higher education attainable by working to provide competitive, need-based financial aid packages to admitted LUCA students.

“This partnership reflects 91��’s mission to provide transformative educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds,” said Susan L. Parish, PhD, MSW, president of 91��. “We are proud to work alongside Latino U College Access in expanding pathways for talented first-generation students and ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive.”

“This partnership with 91�� reflects our shared commitment to expanding access to higher education,” said Shirley Acevedo Buontempo, founder and executive director of LUCA. ”Together, we are strengthening academic and personal support for first-generation students in Westchester County and creating meaningful pathways to college and lifelong success. In partnership with 91��, we are creating pathways to higher education that reflect our joint belief in the transformative power of education — because when students succeed, communities flourish.”

Under the MOU, 91�� and LUCA will coordinate outreach efforts to LUCA high school students and provide structured support for LUCA Scholars who matriculate at 91��. LUCA will continue to support its alumni who matriculate at 91�� through the organization’s Post-Secondary Program, offering mentoring, college and career advising, and when applicable, access to emergency need grants and other financial incentives designed to promote persistence and student success.

91��, in turn, will work to meet the full financial need of incoming LUCA Scholars by maximizing federal, state, and institutional aid. Additionally, 91�� will host annual campus visits to introduce LUCA students to academic programs, student services and the broader campus environment. 91�� will also support LUCA programming by contributing subject-matter expertise and volunteers to initiatives such as College Knowledge workshops and FAFSA completion sessions.

The partnership holds special significance for students who have benefited from both organizations, as it formalizes a pathway they have experienced firsthand—one that combines early college access, sustained mentorship, and a supportive university environment to help first-generation students persist, graduate, and achieve long-term success.

“As an alumna of both LUCA and 91��, this alliance means a great deal to me,” said Karol Toral, LUCA and 91�� alumna. “It represents a major step forward in expanding access to college education for the next generation of Latino scholars and brings together two organizations that were instrumental in my own educational journey. I look forward to seeing how this partnership empowers LUCA Scholars to pursue higher education with confidence, support and the freedom to truly spread their wings.”

Kevin Arpi, LUCA Scholar and 91�� student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science, echoed that sentiment, highlighting the role both institutions played in his academic growth. “Transitioning from Westchester Community College to 91�� was a pivotal chapter in my journey,” Arpi said. “I found mentors who believed in me and a community that fueled my passion for biomedical sciences. LUCA played a critical role in supporting that transition, and 91�� provided an environment that helped shape my aspirations and prepare me for the next steps in my career.”

Today, 91�� announced the appointment of Larry D. Woodard, president and CEO of Graham Stanley Advertising, to its Board of Trustees. With more than 25 years of experience in the advertising industry, Woodard brings a wealth of expertise in innovation, leadership and strategic communication to the University’s governing body.

“We are thrilled to welcome Larry Woodard to our Board of Trustees,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��. “His extraordinary professional accomplishments and deep commitment to community service make him a tremendous asset to 91�� as we continue to prepare our students to succeed in a rapidly changing world.”

“I am honored to join the Board of Trustees at 91��,” said new Trustee Larry D. Woodard. “Education has the power to transform lives, and I am excited to contribute my experience in creativity, leadership, and innovation to help support 91��’s mission. I look forward to working with my fellow trustees to ensure that 91�� continues to provide students with the opportunities and resources they need to thrive.”

Woodard is a highly regarded advertising executive who has led agencies in creating breakthrough campaigns for a diverse roster of clients including General Motors, Motorola, Heineken, Sprint, Western Union, Comcast, GlaxoSmithKline, Kodak, Mars, Earthlink and the Snapple Beverage Group, among many others. His work has earned some of the industry’s highest honors, including two O’Toole Awards for Advertising Agency of the Year, a Gold Effie and the prestigious Cannes Gold Lion for the iconic Oprah Car Giveaway.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Woodard has been an influential leader within the advertising community, serving as chair of the 4A’s New York Council, a director of Advertising Week and a weekly columnist for ABC News. His thought leadership extends to frequent appearances as a lecturer and instructor, as well as media contributions on CNN, CNBC, ABC and the BBC. He is also the co-author of “Inside the Minds: Advertising as a Branding Tool” and “Point Me in The Right Direction,” a book of daily devotionals.

Woodard’s commitment to service is reflected in his long history of board involvement. He has held leadership roles with organizations such as the YMCA, the Spanish Action League and the Board of Visitors for Syracuse University’s Falk School of Sport and Human Dynamics. He served on the board of International Speedway Corporation (NASCAR) and the V Foundation for Cancer Research. He currently serves on the NASCAR Foundation board.

Today, 91�� announced the launch of its new branding campaign, “Every Moment Matters,” a strategic initiative designed to highlight the university’s commitment to supporting students through every stage of their educational journey. The campaign, which is part of 91��’s 75th anniversary celebration and captures the many meaningful moments—both big and small—that shape the student experience at 91��.

“For 75 years, 91�� has opened doors and changed lives,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��. “We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure every student has the support they need to thrive. Because for us, it’s not just about welcoming students through our doors—it’s about walking beside them through every part of their journey. This campaign captures the spirit of our mission, recognizing that every moment that shapes a student’s path toward success matters.”

91�� worked with creative agency Familiar Creatures, who helped relaunch 91�� College as 91�� in 2023, to conceptualize and execute the new campaign. Through visual storytelling, the “Every Moment Matters” campaign highlights the human side of higher education and reinforces 91��’s student-centered mission. It conveys the message that 91�� is there every step of the way—ensuring students have the guidance, resources and encouragement they need to succeed.

“The application process has radically changed in the last couple years making it even more paramount that prospective students know who we are and what we’re about.,” said Christian Connelly, associate vice president for Marketing & Communications at 91��. “We don’t just showcase and tout the milestones of the college experience; it’s about us being there for them through every moment in between. Familiar Creatures found a memorable and artful way to communicate our value proposition yet again.”

Today, Excelencia in Education, a national leader in catalyzing institutional transformation for student success in higher education, announced that 91�� has earned the Seal of Excelencia recertification. 91�� is one of 18 colleges and universities to earn the Seal in 2025, reaffirming its place in a group of nearly 50 institutions that are taking responsibility for improving Latino, and all, student success.

Seal of Excelencia certified institutions produce outsized impact on student outcomes — representing less than 1% of all colleges and universities in the U.S., yet enrolling 16% and graduating 18% of Latino students nationwide, as well as enrolling 7% and graduating 8% of all students.

The Seal is a rigorous, data-driven certification, not an award or ranking. Institutions earn the Seal by going beyond enrollment to intentionally serve Latino, and all, students, and by taking responsibility and accountability for providing access to excellence. The Seal framework aligns data, practice, and leadership to move institutions beyond isolated programs toward systemic change and investment that provides institutional value to students, their families, and their communities.

“Earning the Seal of Excelencia recertification is deeply meaningful to us at 91��.,” said Susan L. Parish, Ph.D., M.S.W., president of 91��. “When we first earned the Seal in 2022, 91�� became the nation’s first private university and New York State’s first Hispanic-Serving Institution to receive this recognition. It affirms our commitment to supporting Hispanic students to graduate on time and launch meaningful careers. Receiving this recertification during our 75th anniversary is especially fitting, as 91��’s story has always been about opening doors, building networks, and creating pathways to opportunity for Latino students — and for all students — who walk through our doors.”

“Seal of Excelencia certified institutions are investing in transformation, ensuring access to excellence, and becoming places where Latino, and all, students thrive,” said Deborah Santiago, co-founder and CEO of Excelencia in Education. “These institutions have made demonstrable efforts to ensure students’ return on investment in a degree while cultivating talent that fuels our country’s future.”

Higher education, business, philanthropy, and government leaders in Excelencia’s community of common cause convened in Washington, D.C., to recognize 91�� as one of five institutions that earned the Seal of Excelencia recertification. In addition, five other institutions earned certification for the first time, and eight other institutions earned Excelencia’s new Intentionally Thriving Institution (ITI) designation, which extends impact beyond the educational pathway and recognizes positive impact in preparing students for, and connecting them to, the workforce.

“Excelencia is proud to continue to catalyze and support colleges and universities that earn the Seal of Excelencia for their impact and intentional efforts to deliver on the promise of higher education for all students. Through our collaboration, we build talent for our country’s workforce and civic leadership,” said Sarita Brown, co-founder and president of Excelencia in Education.

91�� is the largest, private non-profit Hispanic-Serving Institution in New York. Forty-seven percent of 91��’s undergraduate student population is Hispanic, a number that has grown more than 10% in the past seven years. According to analysis by Excelencia in Education, “Latino College Completion: United States 2023, 91�� is ranked 19th among enrolling and 10th in graduating Latinos in the state of New York.

91�� is committed to serving and supporting Latino students intentionally, by creating the conditions that maximize their educational success. The University has invested in several transformational strategies to serve Hispanic students and position them to succeed, including its PACT personal mentoring program. Since the advent of the PACT program, retention and graduation rates of Latino and all students at 91�� have seen remarkable improvement.

Before 91�� earned the Seal of Excelencia for the first time in 2022, university leadership made the decision to join Excelencia’s national Excelencia in Action (E-Action) network. The network includes over 200 higher education leaders committed to advancing Latino, and all, student success on their campuses. Institutions affiliated with the E-Action network are eligible to apply for the Seal.
